Community Building events hosted by Whatcom Family & Community Network celebrate the power of community collaboration to support children, youth, families, and other caregivers. These events honor the history of the organization’s founder, Dr. Ken Gass, by focusing on people and organizations acting with positive intent to increase community solutions to complex issues so that children and youth can thrive across their lifespans.
For 25 years, WFCN hosted an annual Community Builder Award event, which honored individuals, groups of people, and organizations engaged in community change efforts that promoted social connection, opportunities for youth and families to participate in community life in a meaningful way, and other efforts to build a stronger community through collaboration. See the list of past Ken Gass Community Building Award honorees here.
In 2024, WFCN shifted focus away from the Award banquet format with intention of bringing community builders together for more social connection via networking and learning opportunities. Community Builder events have transitioned to being WFCN’s annual fundraiser.
In 2025, we hosted a Community Builder Breakfast with a goal of networking around Hope Science and goals for the future to support Whatcom children, youth, and families.
In 2026, our Community Builder Celebration acknowledged WFCN’s 35th anniversary in service to Whatcom County and elevated the importance of mental wellbeing for children, teens, and the adults who support them. Dr. Greg Hammer, author of A Mindful Teen, was a keynote speaker. Our first time raffle was a success as well!
An ad hoc committee of the board of directors plans the events annually. Community members are welcome to serve on the planning team! Contact Kristi at executivedirector@wfcn.org if you are interested.
