Whatcom Family & Community Network
"strengthening diversity, building community, investing in children and families"

Our Mission

“to build the capacity of our community to support children, youth and families to develop the skills and opportunities they need to lead healthy productive lives.”

Meeting Our Mission

“We meet our mission by helping others meet theirs.”

The Whatcom Family & Community Network does not usually provide services directly to families, but functions as a catalyst and facilitator to assure abundant resources, both formal and informal, are available for families. Sometimes this includes direct family support. WFCN meets its mission through its primary strategy of community mobilization.  This includes:

  • Support to organizing efforts at the grassroots level.
  • Support to strategic county-wide partnerships and initiatives.
  • Convening residents around critical family issues.
  • Assistance in the development of funding and resources to local efforts.
  • Promotion of youth and adult service, leadership, and recognition.
  • Broadening the diversity of civic engagement in local action.
  • Promotion of asset-based and family support practices.
  • Piloting and testing promising practices in family support.
  • Training and education to support local leadership.

As the local PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY NETWORK : “to encourage healthy and responsible behavior among youth and families by identifying unmet needs and advocating, networking, and supporting local community strategies to meet these needs.”  (previous Network mission)

As the local CMASA Policy Board: reduction of substance abuse, including alcohol, tobacco, or other drug abuse, and violence through the collaborative efforts of educators, law enforcement, local government officials, local treatment providers, and concerned community and citizens' groups.”

The Network legally operates under the  501(c)(3) private nonprofit  "Whatcom County Commission on Children and Youth" and is affiliated with the Washington State Family Policy Council, a family-community-state partnership that helps prevent child abuse and neglect, youth substance abuse and supports school success and other issues concerning families.
